Kyle has become a very familiar face at camp, returning for his fifth summer this year! He joined our camp family as a counselor in 2022, got trained in Orton-Gillingham in 2024, and is furthering his training this summer as a clinical level tutor. We’re excited to welcome Kyle back to camp and watch him continue to grow as he inspires growth in our campers.
Tell us about where you’re from!
I'm from Melbourne Australia, biasedly the best city in the world. We have such a multicultural city that our food and drinks are second to none. Between the care free nature of Aussies and the beaches it's hard not to fall in love.
What keeps you coming back to Camp Spring Creek?
The community. I have met some of my favourite people in the world at csc. The growth I've seen in campers aswell is something truly inspiring and one of the many reasons I myself trained with Susie to be a tutor.
What was one of the highlights from working at Camp Spring Creek last summer?
Reconnecting with familiar faces and creating friendships with new ones. Corny, but I genuinely love the community that's built at camp.
What are you looking forward to the most this summer?
Further challenging myself as a tutor, taking the next step in being able to aid the campers further in their learning journeys. Also the biking Virginia Creeper trail! I think I about cried when we couldn’t go last year. My favourite weekend activity by far.
How did you become interested in getting trained in Orton-Gillingham?
I was previously a teacher back home and was seeing first hand the struggles that some of our dyslexic students were going through, so to be able to be apart of the change and assist these students was something I knew I wanted to be apart of.
What is your favorite book or series that you’ve read?
Favourite book is probably Once by Morris Gleitzman
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Moving abroad for more than a year.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I'm a incredibly social, I spend as much time out and about with friends and family. If I'm at home I'm probably sleeping.
What advice would you give a camper trying something new for the first time?
You'll never regret giving something a go, even if you only try a bit. You might learn you love something new. Or you might just get a funny story to tell later to your friends. Win win in my book.
